Today, along with the official release of ThoughtEcho v4.0.0, I am excited to introduce a new member I’ve poured a lot of heart into polishing — Thoughter.

It is not just an ordinary chat box waiting for questions, nor is it a floating widget waiting for you to copy and paste text. It is a thinking companion truly integrated into your notebook. It traverses across all your local notes, understands your journaling context, retrieves golden sparks from the past, and offers suggestions right when you write.

More importantly: it never modifies your notes without your explicit consent. Every change is yours to approve.

1. Farewell to 3.0: Why Traditional Chat Windows Fall Short

Back in the ThoughtEcho 3.0 era, like many note-taking apps, I experimented with integrating AI.

If you used 3.0, you might remember the flow: select a paragraph in the editor, click “Polish” or “Analyze Source”, a modal popup appears in the center, and text streams in line by line. If it looks good, you manually click Apply and return to your editor.

Did it work? Yes. But the interaction felt fragmented — like invoking a disposable typewriter in the middle of writing:

  1. No global awareness: It could not see the hundreds of notes written in the past, unable to recognize resonance across different sparks;
  2. No context accumulation: Every new session was a blank slate, blind to your writing habits and aesthetic preferences.

When large language models gain tool calling and autonomous reasoning capabilities, AI shouldn’t be confined to a popup as a typewriter. In ThoughtEcho, I wanted it to feel like a desk-side companion: when you jot down a fleeting thought, it surfaces a resonant echo from an old note; when you need clarity, it hands you a well-structured proposal card.

That was the spark behind Thoughter.

2. From Prototype to Engineering: Architecture & Open-Source Learnings

In my first blog post, I mentioned that ThoughtEcho originally started as a vibe-coded weekend project to solve my own daily needs after Claude 3.5 Sonnet launched. But putting a reasoning agent with tool-calling capabilities smoothly into a mobile app while maintaining local-first speed and responsiveness requires solid engineering.

When designing Thoughter’s agent architecture, I studied mature open-source practices:

  • OpenCode: Drawing inspiration from its restrained, intuitive native tool calling mechanics and task execution pipeline;
  • Gemini CLI: Learning from its rigorous design in context building, secure local data access, and memory isolation.

Combining these agent patterns with ThoughtEcho’s SQLite local storage and interaction flows culminated in Thoughter in v4.0.0.

3. Four Core Capabilities: What Can Thoughter Do for You?

1. Traversing Local Notes for Resonant Retrieval

Previously, asking an LLM “give me some thoughts on time” would only return generic famous quotes.

In ThoughtEcho 4.0, Thoughter has the safe capability to explore your local notebook:

  • Sparks from the past: Resurfacing a quote you saved months ago, or a stray reflection recorded on a quiet evening;
  • Interconnecting inspirations: Connecting two seemingly unrelated notes across tags to spark new ideas;
  • Contextual citations: Offering fitting references tailored to your current train of thought.

All retrieval and reasoning runs locally through device coordination, allowing dormant notes to flow once more.

2. Proposal Cards: Never Editing Without Permission

When writing, an AI taking the liberty to alter text or write directly to the database disrupts the flow.

In Thoughter’s design, AI does not write directly to the database. Whether exploring thoughts or drafting a new entry, it only presents a structured Proposal Card:

  • Faithful preview: Formatted directly in note card aesthetics, clear at a glance;
  • Location and weather awareness: Option to attach current GPS location and real-time weather;
  • Quick inline editing: Tweak text or tags directly on the card without round-trip chatting;
  • Flexible saving: Click “Save” to commit to local storage, or “Open in Editor” for full-screen refinement.

Only after you click confirm does anything touch your local storage. When and how to save remains 100% in your hands.

3. A Memory System That Grows with You

True companionship requires listening and remembering. With long-term memory enabled, Thoughter learns your recording rhythm:

  • Whether you prefer crisp, succinct sentences or rich prose;
  • Whether you prefer plain daily reflections or historical literary allusions;
  • Whether you want polishing to preserve your natural tone or reframe the expression.

Note on synchronization: We are designing an end-to-end encrypted memory sync system for future updates, allowing your companion’s memory to securely sync across your devices.

4. Native Editor Integration: Frictionless Collaboration

Thoughter is deeply embedded into ThoughtEcho’s writing environment:

  • In the full-screen editor, tapping the ✨ icon in the top right invokes AI capabilities;
  • Ask Thoughter: Enter a conversation carrying the full context of your current note;
  • One-tap actions: Tap “Polish text”, “Continue spark”, “Analyze sources”, or “Deep dive” — Thoughter initiates tasks with full context and delivers structured cards.

No stacked popup clutter — thinking and writing remain fluid and calm.

4. In Closing: Bringing Machine Sensitivity to Human Spark

After finishing Thoughter’s first prototype, I had my first conversation with it. When I typed “I am the developer of ThoughtEcho”, and it thoughtfully congratulated me, the words on screen gave me a quiet moment of warmth.

It was no longer just static code, but a presence living inside the notebook I built with my own hands.

Every morning, it offers inspiration grounded in past notes; during daily reflections, it catches fleeting thoughts without missing a beat.

Technology is never about drowning human expression in a flood of AI-generated content. It is about amplifying the genuine thoughts and sparks of each individual.

ThoughtEcho 4.0.0 is now live across all platforms. I hope Thoughter becomes a quiet, capable companion on your recording journey.
